Slow Cooker Warm Apple Cinnamon Spiced Wine has the warm spices and orange found in mulled wine, but has the flavorful additions of apple cider, spiced rum, and pieces of apple!

I like to make this in my slow cooker so it can simmer on its own unattended, but directions for making it on the stove are included in the recipe card.

Regardless of your cooking method, one thing is for sure – it will make your house smell amazing!

It just makes me want to curl up with a soft blanket while sipping a mug (or two) of this holiday treat!

Ingredients needed for this recipe (scroll down to recipe card for complete recipe):

  • Red wine – cab sauvignon, merlot, zinfandel
  • Spiced rum
  • Apple cider
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Cloves
  • Nutmeg
  • Orange
  • Apple – optional

What kind of wine is best?

A hearty, full-bodied red wine is best for mulled wine. I like to use a merlot, cabernet sauvignon, zinfandel, or a red blend.

Can I make it in advance?

Yes, you can make spiced wine in advance. If you do, I wouldn’t add the rum until about 30 minutes before you serve it so the alcohol doesn’t burn off.

How to serve Spiced Wine?

Serve the spiced wine in mugs that have handles since the contents will be hot.

The spiced wine can be left in the slow cooker on the “warm” setting so guests can serve themselves.

Cinnamon sticks, apple slices, or an orange peel from the slow cooker make great garnishes. Apple that soaks in the wine is delicious!

Spiced Wine is great served:

  • As a welcome cocktail handed out to guests at a party.
  • Self-serve with mugs, sliced apple, and orange slices for a DIY cocktail bar.
  • It’s a delicious accompaniment to desserts like Pumpkin Spice Rum Cake or Slow Cooker Apple Cobbler!

Another cozy, warm drink for the cooler months is Spiced Apple Cranberry Warm Rum Punch! (pictured below)

Serve your guests some Cinnamon Pumpkin Mini Muffins or a slice of Cranberry Banana Bread with a glass of the mulled wine for a complete fall treat!

Equipment

  • 5 quart slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 5 cups apple cider
  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 orange
  • 1 apple sliced or diced (optional)
  • 1/2 cup spiced rum

Instructions

Slow Cooker Instructions

  • Add apple cider, wine, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg and cloves to slow cooker.
  • Peel a clean, washed orange and throw the orange peel in the slow cooker. Cut the peeled orange in half and squeeze the juice into the liquids in the slow cooker.
  • Put the lid on and turn to “high” for an hour.
  • Reduce the temperature to either "low" or "keep warm", add rum and if using it, the sliced/diced apple. It can sit with the lid on or off for hours or serve after the rum and apples have been added. Serve in mugs and garnish with apple and/or cinnamon sticks.

Stove Instructions

  • Add everything but the rum to a large sauce pan or Dutch oven, bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, then add the rum and if using, the sliced/diced apple.  Serve in mugs and garnish with apple slices and/or cinnamon sticks.

Notes

  • Traditional mulling spices include star of anise.  I don’t care for its licorice flavor, so I omitted it.  Feel free to add it if you like.
  • I like Sailor Jerry spiced rum, but feel free to use what you like best!
  • If you’re looking for a “Shh..there’s wine in here” mug, I found some on Amazon.
