Slow Cooker Apple Cobbler is a great dessert to make when the seasons start to change from summer to fall!

The warm spices of cinnamon and nutmeg in a baked dessert just feel so cozy as the weather begins to cool.

This slow cooker dessert is especially great when your stove and oven are occupied during the busy holidays!

My first slow cooker cobbler was actually Slow Cooker Cranberry Cobber – a great recipe when cranberries are in season!

Ingredients needed for this recipe (scroll down to recipe card for complete recipe):

  • Baking apples (Fuji, Gala, Honey Crisp, Granny Smith, etc.)
  • Granulated sugar
  • Corn starch
  • Vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Milk (I used oat milk)
  • Butter

What are the best apples for cobbler?

The best apples for making cobblers, pies, and crisps are “baking apples”, which hold their shape when baked, unlike other types of apples that fall apart and turn to mush.

Some baking apples include: Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Honey Crisp, Fuji, Gala, and Honey Gold, to name a few.

Conversely, you’ll want apples like Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and McIntosh for recipes where you want the apples to break down (making cakes, apple sauce, or apple butter).

How to make Slow Cooker Apple Cobbler

  1. Add the chopped apples to a slow cooker.
  2. Combine some of the sugar (some is for later), corn starch, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg..  Add this to the apples and stir to combine.
  3. With the now-empty mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, milk, and melted butter.
  4. Pour or spoon the batter over the apples and spread it over evenly.  Bake in slow cooker. (full instructions on recipe card below)

How to serve Slow Cooker Apple Cobbler

I use a large spoon and scoop the cobbler right out of the slow cooker.

Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream is the perfect finishing touch!  The creaminess combined with the warm apples and spices is divine!

How to store apple cobbler

Once cooled, store leftovers in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.

Freezing and reheating the cobbler, may result in an less than ideal apple texture.

What is the difference between a cobbler and a crisp?

Crisps have a crispy topping that is made with butter, sugar, flour, and oats.  Cobblers have a slightly cakey, biscuit-like topping.

Equipment

  • 5 quart slow cooker
  • Mixing bowl
  • dish towel (it absorbs moisture)

Ingredients

Apple mixture

  • non-stick cooking spray
  • 4 baking apples (Gala, Fuji, Honey Crisp, Granny Smith, etc.) cubed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp corn starch
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch ground nutmeg

Cobbler mixture

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter melted

Instructions

Prepare apple mixture

  • Spray slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. Add apples to slow cooker.
  • In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the rest of the apple mixture ingredients, then add the mixture to the apples and toss to coat evenly.

Prepare cobbler mixture

  • To the now-empty mixing bowl, combine the cobbler mixture ingredients. Stir to combine, then spoon or pour the batter over the apples in the slow cooker and spread evenly.
  • Place dish towel under lid and cook on high for about 2 hours. If the cobbler topping doesn't look fully cooked, cook for another 20-30 minutes or until the topping is fully cooked.
  • The edges will be chewy and slight crispy with a soft cake-like cobbler topping. Excellent served with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream! Enjoy!

Notes

  • If your slow cooker is known to have a "hot spot", rotate crock at the half-way point if possible to prevent burning.
  • This recipe has only been tested in an oval 5-quart slow cooker.  If you use a different size slow cooker, the cooking times may vary.
