Slow Cooker Warm Apple Cinnamon Spiced Wine
Made with red wine, spiced rum, and the flavors of apples, cinnamon, and warm, cozy spices, Slow Cooker Warm Apple Cinnamon Spiced Wine is the perfect drink for a cold night! This festive drink can be made in a slow cooker or on the stove.

Slow Cooker Warm Apple Cinnamon Spiced Wine has the festive flavors of warm spices and orange peel found in mulled wine, but it also has fruity ingredients like apple cider, pieces of apple, red wine, and a little kick from some spiced rum. It’s basically the holidays in a mug!
I make this in my slow cooker so it can simmer on its own unattended, but directions for making it on the stove are included in the instructions.
Regardless of your cooking method, one thing is for sure – take the lid off and your home will smell amazing!
It just makes me want to curl up with a soft blanket while sipping a mug (or two) of this holiday treat.
This is definitely a scent you’ll want to have permeating the air in your home when you have company coming over!

What kind of wine is best for mulled wine?
A hearty, full-bodied red wine is best for mulled wine. I like to use either a merlot, cabernet sauvignon, or red blend.
Can I make spiced wine in advance?
Yes, you can make spiced wine in advance. If you do, I wouldn’t add the rum until about 30 minutes before you plan on serving it.
How to serve Slow Cooker Spiced Wine?
Serve warm spiced wine in mugs with handles since the contents will be hot.
Either a cinnamon stick, apple slices, or an orange slice from the slow cooker is a great garnish. The fruit is delicious after soaking in the warm drink!
Slow Cooker Warm Apple Cinnamon Spiced Wine can be served:
- As a welcome cocktail handed out to guests at parties
- Self-serve style with mugs, sliced apples, and orange slices for DIY cocktails
- As an accompaniment to dessert
Another cozy, festive, warm drink for the cooler months is Spiced Apple Cranberry Warm Rum Punch (pictured below). A favorite for holiday gatherings and parties!
Serve your guests some Cinnamon Pumpkin Mini Muffins or a slice of Cranberry Banana Bread with a glass of Slow Cooker Warm Apple Cinnamon Spiced Wine for a complete fall treat!
NOTES:
- Traditional mulling spices include star of anise. I don’t care for its licorice flavor, so I omitted it. Feel free to add it if you like.

- 1 bottle of red wine
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 4 cloves
- 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 1 orange
- 1 apple sliced or diced (optional)
- 1/2 cup spiced rum
Instructions
Slow Cooker Instructions

- Reduce the temperature to either "low" or "keep warm", add rum and diced apple, if desired. It can sit with the lid on or off for hours or serve after the rum and apples have been added.
Stove Instructions
- To make this recipe on the stove instead of a slow cooker, add everything but the rum to a large sauce pan or Dutch oven, bring to a boil. Simmer for about 30 minutes, then add the rum. Serve in mugs and garnish with apple slices and/or cinnamon sticks.
