Easy Homemade Salsa
Easy Homemade Salsa is what I’ve been told, “The best salsa ever!” The heat level of this salsa can easily be adapted to suit any taste buds, but you’ll have to read on to learn what my secret ingredient is and why it makes this salsa easy and delicious!

Whenever I make Mexican food at home like The Best Carne Asada, enchiladas, burritos, or Fajita Burrito Bowls, I always make Easy Homemade Salsa and guacamole to accompany it!
My whole family loves this spicy salsa, even the kids. In fact, whenever I make it for guests that come over for dinner, they always ask for the recipe!
The secret to my Easy Salsa recipe is…Rotel.
What is Rotel?
Rotel is a magical can of diced tomatoes, green chiles, and spices.
I have tried making this salsa with other (cheaper) brands of canned, diced tomatoes & green chiles, but it is never as good, you really do have to use Rotel.
Ingredients needed for this recipe (scroll down to recipe card for complete recipe):
- Rotel (canned tomatoes & green chiles)
- Onion
- Garlic
- Cilantro
- Salt, pepper
How to make Easy Homemade Salsa
- For a smoother salsa, simply add the ingredients to a food processor. That’s it.
- For a chunkier salsa, pulse the onion and garlic in the food processor first, then add the Rotel and pulse until it’s just combined.
One great thing about this recipe is that you can make it whenever you want since you don’t have to rely on the availability or quality of fresh, ripe tomatoes!
I use different Rotel varieties depending on how spicy I want the salsa to be. While this recipe is for a spicy version, you can easily adjust it to suit your personal spice level.
How long is homemade salsa good for? Can I freeze it?
Homemade salsa can be refrigerated in an air-tight container for up to 4-5 days.
This salsa can also be frozen in freezer-safe containers or bags for up to 4 months. The texture of the salsa may change since tomatoes contain a lot of water.

NOTES:
- To make a less-spicy version, replace the two cans of Rotel Hot, for either two cans of Rotel Mild or Rotel Original.
- I have tried cheaper brands of canned tomatoes & green chiles, and they do not taste the same as Rotel. I highly recommend using the name brand for this recipe!
